Late last year we started production on the latest collaboration with Harald Lunde Helgesen; HLH: Palimpsests. We shot the film up in Northumberland, near the scottish border – such an imposing and beautiful landscape and the perfect setting for the film.

We’ve been working hard on the editing and sound – and just have one final element to lay down. We’re currently pursuing a few actresses to record the voiceover – we’re very excited and can’t wait to get the video out there.

We Once Were Tide
UK (dir. Jason Bradbury)
Rating: ****

“A feeling of isolation permeates the sparse and sad We Once Were Tide: figuratively and visibly in its Isle of Wight setting. The scenery is desolate and dark under gloomy clouds: low, rolling hills sweeping down to end in murky beaches. Everything is shot through with melancholy, as Anthony (Alex Scott) sullenly looks after his invalid mother and tries to snatch what moments of happiness he can with Kyle (Tristan Bernays). Their intimacy is tender and believable, which makes it all the more affecting when it becomes clear their bond is doomed to be broken. To a careful viewer, much is conveyed in minute gestures, like the pulling over of a duvet.”

The film is the second collaboration between Harald and filmmaker Jason Bradbury with an original score by Siri Schippers Skaar.

The Film

The film is set in a fictional world where subterranean farmers take great risks when entering deep caves in order to reach crystal fields where they harvest precious minerals to be traded in the nearby city. As one man is lost to the mines another has to step into the darkness. Son follows father and the cycle continues. We meet a young man just at the initiation into this life of hardship.

The Crystal Farmers was intended to take a more abstract approach to a fashion film; both Harald and Jason have no interest in fashion film that is an extension of a catwalk show or a moving photo-shoot. They work to the belief that film is at it’s most powerful when used to tell a narrative or create a mood, however abstractly that may be done.

Through a unique use of voices distorted and transposed until sometimes only a faint association to something human can be made, Siri has created a score which colour the gloom with feelings of sadness in a mother’s hopeful humming, the weight of thousands of tonnes of rock above echoing caves and tormented screams from the destinies lost in the depths.

So I thought, seeing as I’m having a productive Sunday, I’d spend a second to detail some of the projects i’ve been working on and what the next few months holds.

We are putting the final touches to the sound for the brand new HLH fashion video. The post production on this film has been, to say the least, long… But in the end I think it has paid off. I’m hoping I will be able to post the video in the next few days.

I am currently working on a fashion film for Paris based designer Victor Carril and his label, ISNOTDEAD. I am such a fan of his debut collection and am extremely proud that I will form part of extending the reach of his work. The tentative schedule for the project is shoot early April, with the finished film around mid-end of may in time for Mode à Paris in June. More details on this in the next few weeks.

Work has also begun on the next fashion film for HLH – which will also be produced in time for Mode à Paris, the shoot is penciled in for the first week of May. It’s very early days at the moment, but i’m excited from the initial meetings.

Aside from the promo’s, fiction film wise, We Once Were Tide is going from strength to strength, currently accepted to four festivals, and we have just closed a deal with PRO FUN in Germany who will release the film theatrically and on DVD in the autumn. Both Matt and I are over the moon with the reaction we have been getting.

I had the first meeting about my next short, which I hope to shoot in August / September ready for the festivals in 2011. It’s too early to say anything, but we should have a better idea and be able to post a basic synopsis in the next couple of weeks.

All I can say is exciting times, busy, but exciting!!

This weekend marked a very special occasion – although I was too poor to celebrate haha. Anyway, over the weekend I completed my most recent short We Once Were Tide. To say it’s been a long journey might be an understatement. Started back in October or November 2009, Matt and myself began writing. We shot at the end of February after months of hard work and endless begging and groveelling from friends and family for money!

Anyway, cut a long story short – I’m over the moon with it. I’ve authored my first Blu-ray which I can’t wait to burn to disc and check out on my TV – and sometime this week the film will be laid onto HDCam tape. All very exciting. So far, we’ve entered the film into 5 festivals, and only been rejected from one. And been accepted to one, but that’s very shh at the moment!

All exciting stuff, stand by for lot’s more updates over the coming year!!
Formulated from the essence of the collection, the film centers around two miners as they dig deeper to farm crystals.

We’re just finishing the sound at the moment and expect to release the video mid-February.

2011 is already shaping up to being a busy one, with not one, but two fashion films for Harald in the pipeline before June. Exciting times!

Preview trailer of the short film We Once Were Tide.

Set on the Isle of Wight, the film tells the story of Anthony and Kyle, and their last night together as Kyle moves away leaving Anthony to look after his terminally ill mother. Poetic in nature, the film is concerned with exploring the intimate and often unspoken moment in which we give something special away.

OFFICIAL SELECTION:
25th London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival

(many more to be announced as soon as press embargos are done!)
